Indonesia is a big country, and in some areas it can easily access the internet to get the latest news. According to the statistics of digital marketing research institutions, the estimated e-marketers in 2018 are more than 100 million people in Indonesia. With that amount. Indonesia will become the fourth largest smartphone user in the world after China, India and America. But besides that, Indonesia is also worried of fake news or hoax news. Hoax news is very disturbing for Indonesian youth generation. Because it’s easy to access information that is correct or not, when young people trust the hoax 100% they can accuse each other. Because emotions and unstable thoughts can make teenagers easily tricked by fake news or Hoax news.
Social media is one of the media literacy that is most often used by the youth generation. While hoaxes are most often found through social media. According to Mastel survey, 92.40 percent of the people stated that social media such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram were the media that often received news about hoaxes. In addition, 62.80 percent stated that the chat application is another channel that is also actively used in the spread of hoaxes.
When every day the younger generation sees and believes in hoaxes, those who are emotionally unstable will blame each other. Those who are mentally low will feel depressed, which will make they feel upset.
Hoaxes can also reduce the productivity of the younger generation. Young people who often hear or read hoaxes will also waste more time. They will waste time just reading or hearing wrong information. If the hoax continues to grow, it will make Indonesia worse.
As a young generation we are expected not to be easily provoked by Hoax news, and are suggested to think more clearly. Before we spread the news or information to others, make sure in advance whether the news is true or not. When we find a hoax we better report it.
