Life Goals of Millennials
According to United Nations on www.unesco.org, youth is a group of people between the ages of 15 to 24. This is the stage of transition between child and adult phase. These phases include someone who just graduate from their high school or university, but also try to find their first job. Youth is a phase when they are still dependent to their family economically, but also start trying to live independently to reach their dreams.
The youth who was born between 1981 and 1996 (ages 23 to 38 in 2019) is called the millennials. When we were children, we were told that we should be a doctor, an engineer, a teacher or a fireman as a life goal. But now, millennials have different goals and hobbies. They tend to be a content creator (photographer or videographer), lifestyle vlogger, or being an entrepreneur. This is a new global phenomenon that might happen for several reasons.
The first reason is, youth or millennials is known as an idealist, freedom chaser, being creative, and out of the box. Yet, they have a bad image such as rebel, and messy. Both are true. This is an age to explore and learn. This is the time to open their eyes and mind to the world, to try so many things and opportunities to know what kind of life they want to live. They are also in a searching of who they are, what they like, and what they want to do. And in order to do that, they need to see other people.
Second, the exposure of internet. Nowadays, we live in a world where internet is an inseparable part of our live. Social media as a platform for communicate and socialize, become the most important thing in millennial’s live. Social media make people connect to each other wherever they are, share their thoughts, activities, and their talent and they can get other people’s comments, and likes. Also, we can follow others content that match our interest. People who have thousands of followers, called influencer, become the millennial’s idol. Just like their idol, teenager in this generation compete to create their feeds looks great, and interesting. So, they will be called as someone who is cool or updated. This situation makes this generation tend to be a content creator. They are great at making and editing photos and videos also talking and writing about their opinions and thoughts online. They love this kind of atmosphere, because they are free to express themselves, and their creativity.
Third, the previous two reasons make millennials become not the behind-the-desk type of worker. They don’t like being tied down from 8 to 5 to do endless work for some money. They prefer remote working type, and flexible working hour. Because of their characteristic, they also prefer to work with company that allow them to spark their creativity, speaks their idea, and respect them as a partner, not a subordinate. If the company doesn’t provide them, they are not scared to leave and choose to do their passion as a content creator or an entrepreneur. Although not all people in this generation are like that, there’s an idea to them to start their own business rather than to climb into the corporate ladder.
This condition becomes a new phenomenon. As an older generation, parents need to understand. Millennials are in ages to explore, failed, and try again in order to know what they really want to do. They just need to be taught to work hard, and whatever they choose as their career, they will be success. In case they choose to talk in front of camera as a vlogger, or being a photographer, unless it harms other people or themselves, and they can make money from it. I think parents don’t have to be worried and they need to support their kids.
